From which materials is your pet food packaging made?

Packaging material is crucial for delivering safe, high-quality pet food to our consumers, as well as helping to reduce food waste. We use different packaging materials for our products depending on the type of food.  For example with dry pet food, we use paper boxes and bags as well as plastic bags; for wet pet food, we use plastic and aluminium pouches and cans and our snacks’ packaging is made from plastic materials. At Purina, we strive to improve the performance of our pet food packaging; we innovate and collaborate with stakeholders to minimise the environmental impact of our packaging on the planet and its resources.

To minimise the impact of our pet food packaging on the environment, we have undertaken a series of actions.

• We are working to optimise our packaging to the minimal resource use while ensuring uncompromising protection to ensure the quality of our pet food. For example, we minimised the weight of some of our pet food packaging by reducing the plastic layer. This effort allowed us to save more than 500 tons of packaging. We also re-designed our Gourmet cardboard multipack packaging with a new folding concept, which helped us to save nearly 250 tons of packaging.

• We are working hard to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable Purina packaging by 2025. This global Nestlé commitment includes all Purina products. Some of our pet food is already available in fully recyclable packaging but we know we need to do more. You can read about the recyclability of our packaging here.

• We are collaborating with different stakeholders to develop new approaches to increase recycling. We are actively working with recycling technology companies and collection agencies to identify interim solutions as quickly as possible for key packaging types so they can be recycled.
